You've probably used AI in some form recently, even if you don't realize it. Maybe you've asked a question to a smart assistant like Siri or Alexa, used a language model like ChatGPT to help you with a task, or seen a personalized movie recommendation on a streaming service. These are all examples of what's known as "Narrow AI."

Narrow AI is incredibly good at one specific thing. A chess AI can beat a grandmaster, but it can't write a poem or diagnose a disease. A facial recognition system can identify a person in a crowd, but it can't hold a conversation.

But what if AI could do all of that and more? What if it could learn, reason, and apply its knowledge across a vast range of tasks, just like a human? That's the concept of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

AGI: The Difference Between a Tool and a Mind

Think of it this way:

• Narrow AI is a highly specialized tool, like a hammer. It's fantastic for hitting nails, but useless for sawing wood.

• AGI would be a versatile artisan, capable of picking up any tool and learning to master it, and even inventing new ones. It wouldn't just follow instructions; it would understand the why behind them, adapting to new situations and solving problems it was never specifically trained for.
